News Release: HAMILTON, Bermuda – The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) is delighted to announce that it has been honored with aBest of Bermuda Award for its annual Youth Climate Summit. This award was earned in the category of Environmental Education.
The Youth Climate Summit is a comprehensive program designed to actively involveBermuda’s youth, aged 13-22, in meaningful conversations with experts and activists about the critical importance of addressing climate change and their role in promoting global sustainability. This weeklong summit offers a unique platform for students to engage with local and international climate and environmental experts, leaders, and young activists, focusing on areas such as Conservation, Sustainability, and Climate Justice. The highly acclaimed event is set to return for its third year from November 10th to 17th, 2023.

A key highlight of the summit is the Environmental Showcase, hosted at BUEI exclusively for participating students. Local environmental organizations and supporting partners come together to directly interact with students, sharing insights into their work and the reasons behind it. Through these presentations, summit participants can identify potential resources, collaboration opportunities, and gain valuable information to shape their own action plans.
“The Summit provided a platform for youth to collaborate on projects and allowed me to understand what it truly takes to formulate an impactful project that can successfully be implemented. I am incredibly appreciative of BUEI and its sponsors for hosting this event, and hope that it continues for many years to come.” – Satya Darrell, YCS Participant Founding Partners AXA XL and HSBC Bermuda have consistently supported the vision of the Youth Climate Summit since its inception in 2021. Their invaluable contributions extend beyond financial support and encompass knowledge, expertise, connections, credibility, and dedicated individuals, empowering young people to pursue transformative solutions for universal problems.

The week-long summit serves as a foundation for a year-long series of youth-led activities focused on local climate mitigation. Throughout the year, participants can collaborate with students from different schools on their climate action projects. Engaging with businesses and organizations committed to addressing Bermuda’s climate impact, students benefit from regular discussions and field trips. “The Youth Climate Summit emphasizes empowerment and action. The skills that we learned during the summit itself and throughout our initiatives have really culminated in our projects, which has been extremely fulfilling. This is an amazing experience, and the work of the Youth Climate Summit inspires the next generation of activists and change-makers to start making change now.” – Ava Gibson, YCS Participant.

Karla Lacey, CEO of BUEI, expressed her thoughts on the Youth Climate Summit, saying, “At BUEI, we believe that when you know better, you do better. Our goal in creating the Youth Climate Summit program was to engage and empower our youth in a way that was meaningful to them.
“As a registered nonprofit charity, we are incredibly thankful for the generosity of our Youth Climate Summit Partners. None of what we do with this program would be possible without their support.”
