Expecting the church to unite on social issues that impact the very fabric of society is hopeful, but sadly is a dream that shall not come true.

Let’s reflect and understand that even during the days that perfect Jesus walked among mankind, the church was never united. There were different branches or sectors of religious institutions which had various belief systems.

The truth of the matter is that all can read the same Bible, and yet there can be a different “take” on what the Bible is saying, depending on the “filter” of that leader or denomination.

All will agree to the importance of agape and phileo love, and yet time has proven that there are different views on eros love. Some churches openly embrace a lifestyle that clearly caused God to destroy the earth.

Let me ask this question: What stops a church from dealing with hot topics such as immigration and same-sex issues?

Well, once any church begins to compromise its stand on God’s Word, there will be clear divisions among different church denominations.

So, what can cause a church to compromise or choose to serve mammon rather than God?

1. Its Financial Standing – when a church is financially tied to those who do not follow the teachings of God to “the letter” they will grow silent when they should “cry aloud and spare not”. When a church has members who have varying opinions on the topics and issues of the day, that church may grow cold and silent, to protect the flow of money into their church. In other words, that church does not want to “touch” certain issues that will cause their members to boycott church.

When members vacate a church, their finances/money vacate the church too. In short, many have given in to the god of money under the false guise of appearing to be “loving to all”. No, to love is to discipline with love. What is happening in far too many churches is that the Pew controls the pulpit. That is, those who are financially “holding up” the church will determine what
issues the church will speak to publicly.

2. Its Political Standing – when a church has politicians in the congregation that can become another tool that the enemy may use to silence a church. What I find interesting in Bermuda is how many churches of ONE denomination take a different stand or posture on the various issues. So, even the denomination has trouble operating as one, much less all churches.

What is extremely sad is that such churches have actually put their trust in the arm of flesh. They are focused on what politicians and political heavyweights can do for them. Far too many churches are held at bay by being the voice of God because they are following the voice of a particular political party.

Sadly, rather than politicians being guided by the church, the church (in many cases) is being guided by the will of the politicians.

3. Its Personal Standing – it is very difficult for any church to speak up publicly on an issue when that leader does not speak on that issue in their church. It is very hypocritical for a church leader to speak against an issue when they have knowingly allowed that very issue to operate within their church walls.

Bermuda is small, and many Bermudians know “what’s up”. Many are aware of when a church leader has allowed sinful men and women to operate in places of authority inside their church. Essentially what that does is render that church null and void. That church becomes an ineffective voice in public. How can you speak to an issue that you allow under your leadership?

If you are waiting for the churches to unite before becoming a part of any church, then I will never have the privilege of being your pastor. On the other hand, if you understand that churches are functionally different, just as homes are different, then perhaps we shall connect.

Do not waste your time looking for churches to unite. Listen and look for the churches that are doing right. No church is perfect, but some churches are operating in integrity. At the end of the day, you still will be without excuse when you stand before God. Make your move today! See you soon! Blessings Abound!
