This after Wayne Caines, the Minister of National Security and Zane DeSilva, Minister of Tourism and Transport, quit their portfolios in the wake of the public backlash over that ritzy weekend birthday party that went viral on social media.

They were both invited to resign by the Premier following a slew of criticism for breaches of COVID-19 restrictions, including social distancing.

“The events of this weekend seen widely on social media did not represent this Government’s months of struggle and hard work to keep Bermuda safe,” said Premier Burt.

“Every citizen has been forced to make significant changes in how we live, work and socialise; ministers are no different.

“It is this that I communicated to Ministers DeSilva and Caines.”

He also stated that he was “frustrated and immensely disappointed that this incident has deprived the community of two extremely hard working and dedicated ministers”.

But he said both Ministers had worked “tirelessly” over the pandemic.

“Their energy and zeal demonstrated a genuine care and concern for the people of Bermuda. I will remain for ever grateful for their contributions,” said Mr Burt.

“Make no mistake, our commitment is unchanged and each day continues to be devoted to doing the best that we can to create opportunities for Bermudians.”

The big question now is who will the Premier choose to replace them.

That decision, he said, will be made in “the coming days” that lie ahead, just one month after another Cabinet reshuffle last month.

“As these men depart the Cabinet I am frustrated and immensely disappointed that this incident has deprived the community of two extremely hard working and dedicated ministers,” said Mr Burt.

“In the coming days I will set out the assignment of responsibilities following this unexpected change.

“Make no mistake, our commitment is unchanged and each day continues to be devoted to doing the best that we can to create opportunities for Bermudians.”
