Police confirmed today that it was a female trio, including an 81-year-old woman who challenged an alleged gunman who tried to rob the Howzat liquor store on North Shore Road in Hamilton Parish yesterday.

The attempted armed robbery occurred around 8:40am on Father’s Day (June 16), when the suspect “entered the store brandishing an unknown object covered by a white cloth – which was believed to be a firearm – and demanded money from a 57 year old female employee”.

As it turns out, the woman’s elderly mother and another female employee, a 28-year-old Warwick woman, stepped in.

A struggle ensued and a police spokesman said: “As a result, the would-be robber was forced to flee empty-handed on an unknown motorcycle along North Shore Road.

Thankfully, there were no serious injuries reported, with the 57-year-old female employee understood to have sustained abrasions to her arms during the struggle,” he added.

The suspect was described as black, slim and about 5ft 8in, wearing dark clothing and a dark helmet.

Any witnesses should contact the Criminal Investigation Department on 247-1744 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 800-8477.
