New York Daily News: BRONX, By John Annese – A teenage suspect has been arrested in the slaying of Los Angeles drill rapper Moneygang Vontae at a Bronx pharmacy.
River Jones, 18, was charged Thursday with murder in the June 9 ambush.
Avanti Frowner, 27, who rapped under the stage name Moneygang Vontae, was in New York City to scout locations for a music video when five men cornered him at the Amazing Community Pharmacy on E. Tremont Ave. near Arthur Ave. in Tremont., cops said.
The NYPD’s Bronx Warrants Squad arrested Jones on Thursday at Monroe College in New Rochelle, police sources said. Jones lives at a dorm at the school, according to cops.
A police spokesman couldn’t say if he’s believed to be the shooter.
Vontae and a friend from California were buying over-the-counter eye drops at the pharmacy when two of the five suspects approached and asked if he wanted to buy some weed, police sources said.
He said no, and the two suspects were joined by three others who demanded his property and his gold chain, which carried his signature nameplate, cops said.
After a caught-on-video struggle, one of the suspects fumbled with a gun before he shot the drill rapper several times. As Vontae lay bleeding, the gunman fired another shot into his chest, then fled with the massive “Moneygang Vontae” nameplate he wore on his neck, cops said.
Jones awaits arraignment in Bronx Criminal Court.
