Police issued an appeal for witnesses to come forward to assist in the investigation into the disturbance at Somerset Cricket Club on Saturday around 5pm.

A spokesman said: “Police officers were already at the location monitoring the Premier Division football match between Somerset Cricket Club and Boulevard Community Club when the incident occurred.

Details remain limited at this time. However, early information suggests that at the end of the fixture, an unknown male spectator threw a helmet at another spectator, with several altercations then taking place within the crowd.

Additional police units were called to assist in calming the situation, as security personnel and some members of the public joined efforts by police officers already at Somerset Cricket Club grounds to defuse tensions,” he said.

Police personnel later accompanied a minibus transporting Boulevard team members out of the area.”

The spokesman added: “At this time, it is unclear if any members of the community present during the incident were hurt – but apparently none of the responding police officers were injured.

So far no arrests have been made in connection with this matter.

However, inquiries continue and witnesses or any individuals with relevant information are encouraged to call the main police telephone number 295-0011 or the independent and anonymous Crime Stoppers hotline 800-8477 as soon as possible.”
