The Bermuda Police Service issued a public advisory on another set of fake social media accounts purporting to be the Premier and other Government Ministers, demanding money to fund Government initiatives.
A police spokesman issued a statement on Sunday on the “deceptive social media accounts using the names of real Government officials”.
“It appears that individuals on social media, particularly Facebook and Instagram, are ‘cloning’ the social media (Facebook and Instagram) accounts of Bermuda public officials – namely the Premier and Government Ministers.
“These fake social media profiles are being used to contact members of the public and make demands of money for alleged Government initiatives and proposals.
Members of the public should be aware that this is a scam and are advised to verify the claim by calling the Government of Bermuda on 295-5151,” he said.
“Ask to speak with a Department of Communications representative regarding the supposed online proposal or initiative before divulging and personal information.
“Anyone with any information regarding the individual(s) creating or using these fraudulent social media accounts is asked to contact the main police telephone number 295-0011, or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline 800-8477.”
