The Bermuda Police Service has confirmed the report of a vicious attack, first published on social media, that left a 19-year-old male with a severe facial wound after he was slashed with a box cutter.

The post, published this past weekend by a woman listed as Carol Yazoglu on Facebook, stated: “I don’t know what’s going on in Bermuda but we need to fix it quickly!

“An unknown assalant rode to my apartment, in long sleeved shirt, long pants, gloves and full faced mask. Rang my doorbell and when my son answered the door this person sliced his face with a box cutter, ran to his bike which had duct tape over his license plate.

“I am not familiar with Somerset or know anyone who lives in this area. If anyone saw or knows this individual, please contact the Bermuda Police Service. I will give the name of the reporting officer soon.”

When contacted by Bermuda Real, a police spokesman confirmed the incident, which occurred in broad daylight, shortly after 1:30pm on Sunday (July 31).

“Police received a report that a 19-year-old-male sustained facial injuries during an assault at a Mangrove Bay, Sandys Parish residence,” he said.

“It was reported that the victim responded to someone ringing the front door bell at his residence. Upon opening the door police were told he was confronted by a male who allegedly cut him in the face with a bladed article.

“The suspect is described as a dark skinned male, approximately 5’11” in height, dressed in black clothing and wore a grey helmet with a mask over his face,” he added.

“He is reported to have left the area, travelling south on East Shore Road on a dark grey, Sym motorcycle, with black tape covering the license plate.

“This matter remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call 211, the main police number 295-0011 or the confidential Crime Stoppers number, 800-8477.”

The post prompted a slew of comments expressing concern for the young man in what some described as “a horrible” and “dreadful” incident.

Former Opposition MP Jeff Sousa, wrote: “This is absolutely horrible!!!

“Something we see in movies and NOT on our island. I feel for you and especially your son as this is absolutely crazy. Please reach out for help.”

Asked how her son was doing after the attack, she replied and posted: “He’s traumatized, sleeping and trembling.

“We were threatened about three (3) months ago and we reported it to the police…Told it’s just boys trying to appear like big men. So we went on with our lives. I can’t stop crying!”
