Police today confirmed 21-year-old Sophie Fraser-Smith as the young woman who lost her life in a road traffic accident yesterday, marking the eighth fatality on Bermuda’s roads this year.
The accident occurred shortly after 3pm on Tuesday when the motorcycle she was riding on Middle Road in Southampton, near Heron Bay Primary School collided with a truck owned by Dunkley’s Dairy.
A police spokesman said: “She was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance but later succumbed to her injuries. A Family Liaison Officer has been appointed to support Ms Fraser-Smith’s family at this tragic time.
“The truck driver, believed to be a 40-year-old Pembroke man on suspicion of impaired driving. He complied with a demand for breath samples, passed the test and was later released on police bail pending further enquiries.”
Traffic diversions were put in place for several hours while the relevant police personnel processed the scene. Both vehicles have since been impounded as the investigation continues.
Witnesses who have not come forward already are urged to contact Constable Walter Jackson on 247-1230, or via email at wjackson @bps.bm.
