Police today confirmed the death of a 57-year-old female visitor, who was “pulled from shallow waters by on duty lifeguards in an unresponsive state” yesterday (Aug 20) at Horseshoe Bay Beach in Warwick.

Police and other first responders were dispatched to a report of a medical emergency at the popular beach shortly after 3pm on Saturday.

A spokeswoman said: “Despite lifesaving efforts commenced at the scene, she was subsequently pronounced dead on arrival at King Edward Memorial Hospital.

“An autopsy is anticipated to determine the cause of death.

“No further information will be provided until the next of kin has been informed.”

Initial reports circulating earlier today indicated that a young teenaged girl had drowned, which was not the case.

There were also reports circulating around the island that there were no lifeguards on duty when this tragic incident occurred – that too was not the case.
