All eyes may be focused on the upcoming America’s Cup, but the Progressive Labour Party (PLP) has moved into election mode with word that their current leader in the Senate, Renee Ming, will be formally announced as the PLPs candidate in Constituency 1 St George’s North tomorrow.

The PLP has scheduled a news conference at 1:30pm on Tuesday, May 2nd, at the top of Barracks Hill in St George’s. Bermuda Real understands Senator Ming, a born ‘St Georgian’ with strong ties and deep roots in the community, will be formally announced as the PLPs candidate to run in the next General Election for the seat currently held by One Bermuda Alliance (OBA) MP Kenneth Bascome.

Mr Bascome secured 52 percent of the votes cast in C1 in the 2012 General Election held on December 17, 2012, that resulted in a win for the OBA with 19 seats to the PLPs 17.

Overall, the OBA won the popular vote, with 15,928 votes (52%) compared to 14,186 votes (46%) for the PLP. Fifteen Independent candidates secured 2% or 695 votes in the last General Election.

When the next election will be called remains to be seen, but political pundits say there’s speculation that Premier Michael Dunkley may make that announcement right after the America’s Cup, and that the General Election may be held in July before Cup Match. Time will tell.
