Progressive Labour Party MP for St George’s South, Tinee Furbert today extended congratulations to Bermuda’s Special Olympians, who returned home to a big welcoming crowd at the LF Wade International Airport last night.
Just back from competing in the Special Olympic Games in Abu Dhabi, the winning contingent returned with 17 medals, three silver, five bronze and five fourth place finishes, two finished in fifth place, one sixth and another eighth place medalist.
In a statement released this morning, Ms Furbert said: “Well done to Bermuda’s Special Olympians and Special Olympians all over the world!
“Your hard work, enthusiasm and effort is highly respected and supported. To the parents, executive members, coaches and supporters of Bermuda’s Special Olympian team; you are Bermuda’s greatest influencers. You did the ground work – some of us will not fully understand but the outcome and results already tell that story! Bermuda must continue to support our exceptional community.

“I have been following the Bermuda Special Olympics progress via social media and ESPN with excitement and amazement. How proudly our Special Olympians represented our country even when they missed their families in Bermuda. They were loved and supported by their accompanying contingent.

“Sport has a way of bringing people together and sport has a way of spreading awareness of abilities and drive. To see a vision executed with such wonderful outcomes will have our athletes and support system wanting more. This was such a motivating experience that one will always remember. We are so very proud of everyone!
