Preparations for the fifth annual Good Friday Family Fun day hosted by the Open Your Heart Foundation moved into high gear this week.
This year marks the third consecutive year the event will be held at the Royal Naval Field in Sandys, following the move from the former Ireland Rangers field in Dockyard.
Orgainzers anticipate an even bigger turnout this year after more than a thousand residents turned out last year for the event that’s totally free of charge.
Comprised mainly of males, the group started from humble beginnings to give back to the community, particularly families hard hit by the recession and unemployment.
Spokeswoman Tianna Saltus, said the team of 15 volunteers has grown over the years, but their goal remains the same.
“Last year we had roughly 1,000 people throughout the day. Everything we do is for the children. And we aim to provide the best day possible for them. That’s what Open Your Heart Foundation is all about,” said Ms Saltus.
“While we contribute to other causes our main focus is how we can better serve the children to help give them a better quality of life. If you are looking for family orientated fun day that’s all free it’s the place to be,” she added.
Plans begin to take shape annually in February, but the work starts during last week before Good Friday. “That’s always the busiest week for us. And this year we’re thankful to have a bunch of new sponsors, in addition to our loyal sponsors,” Ms Saltus said.
“At this point we’re still accepting sponsors, donations, or volunteers. We can never have enough. And we also ask sponsors to pay directly to the vendors if they choose to sponsor that way. dont use the telephone number
“This year we have fun castles, face painting, go karts, balloons, pack racing off Scott’s Hill, free hair cuts, and an eating competition. And our biggest part of the day is now the dance competition hosted by Bermuda Squad.
“We will also have fishcakes, hot cross buns, hamburgers and hot dogs during the day, with a full dinner and our precious lamb to be served in the evening. We will also be giving out easter baskets and kites. And it’s all free!”
