Bermuda’s imports will be offloaded in Dockyard when the Hamilton docks close for urgent repairs for a week later this month.

The announcement came after a meeting between representatives of Bermuda Container Line (BCL), Stevedoring Services Limited (SSL) and the West End Development Corporation.

Richard Todd of BCL, and Warren Jones, of SSL, both said they were “pleased” with the move.

Mr Jones, who said SSL staff had “no problem” offloading the cargo ship in the West End.

“Our issue was safety and getting the Hamilton dock repaired,” he said. “We are glad that there has been a win-win solution that we can be a part of.”

Wedco General Manager, Andrew Dias, added: “Although this came at short notice, it is a testament to everyone’s willingness to find a solution that three organisations could bring this about.”

Mr Jones stated at a news conference last week that major imports during the America’s Cup and budget shortfalls of the Corporation of Hamilton placed extra demand on the dock’s infrastructure which had “steadily decayed”.

The Hamilton docks will be closed as of March 11 through to March 18.
