Challenged by a general lack of good organic and whole food options in Bermuda, MrOrganic.bm was founded in 2014, as an online wholesale dry goods distributor in Bermuda by Preston James Ephraim, and his wife of four years; Megan.
Together they have a four-year-old son, and Preston has a nine-year-old son as well.
As young entrepreneurs, the couple expanded their business in January, by adding a home based bakery to offer a wide array of organic baked goods that are both gluten and sugar free.
As a team, they also design specific paleo diet plans including diets for diabetics, organic produce, and produce fresh pressed juices and smoothies weekly.
On any given Saturday morning you will find them at the Farmer’s Market , open once a week from 8am to 12pm, with a host of entrepreneurs who showcase some of the best of local produce and homemade goods in the JJ Outerbridge building at Botanical Gardens in Paget.
Their online distributing website specializes in organic products like wild crafted and heirloom grains, legumes, beans, sea vegetables, and mushrooms. They also carry fermented items like sauerkraut, organic chips, gum, nuts, seeds, and trail mix.
To date, Mr Ephraim said their most popular nuts ordered consistently online are cashews, while the most popular trail mix by far, is still ‘Mango Macadamia Nut Adventure’.
Products are listed in specific categories ranging from raw and super foods to supplements, and herb teas to spices. There’s also a wide variety of organic pasta, noodles and rice, to nuts and seeds, and dried fruit.
Organic and super foods are imported from all over the world to support “endurance, agility, detoxifying and overall wellness”. Some of their super food products contain a powdered leaf used primarily in South America for its healthy properties.
Their bakery provides fresh homemade organic vegan, gluten and sugar free goods. Cold-pressed juice flavours include ‘Sunshine Juice’ (carrot, red apple, lemon zest, orange, tumeric root & coconut water), and superfood smoothies like ‘Pink One” and ‘Green One’.
This growing business caters to a new breed of customers it caters to as the more people get busy in life. The more they want ready made, or ready to eat or drink healthy products without having to make it themselves.
At the click of a mouse, or an email, with 24-hour advance notice you can have “a healthy morning or midday boost hand delivered at your workplace”.
“It’s very big in Bermuda…and because lifestyles have become more fast paced than they were in the past, people like to have these products easily accessible and delivered to them on their doorstep,” said Mr Ephraim.
There’s also a team of nutrition consultants “ready to cater to specific dietary requirements” who are “happy to compile a grocery bag or two for your convenience”.
The business started as a vision prompted by Mr Ephraim’s own challenges finding, and following a diet in Bermuda that’s predominantly more plant based with organic foods.
When he moved back to Bermuda from Washington DC around 2002, working as a paralegal, and then as a police officer 2007; finding basic, wholesome, whole grains and basic goods like rice, or even ice cream” proved difficult.
He saw “the lack of organic foods back then as an open window of opportunity”.
Now they specialize in baked goods like “organic coconut flour with a raw cashew icing that’s a red velvet cake made using real beets that’s all gluten free”.
“We have ‘Morning Glory Muffins’ packed with fresh fruit in them. They’re simple delicious and healthy all the way around, plus they’re sweetened with Bermuda Bananas!
“Our ginger and banana breads sell out weekly – that’s the slices and the loaves,” he added.
Their products are also available at both Lindo’s in Warwick and Devonshire, and at SuperMart, and at “boutique markets” like Earth Fare and Better Health.
