Mirrors Volunteer of the Year Award Goes to Jonathan Nisbett at Reception For Volunteers

Volunteers who give their time and energy to the Mirrors Programme were honoured recently at their Volunteer Appreciation Reception held at Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art.

And this year’s Mirrors Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Jonathan Nisbett, ” who demonstrated a deep commitment to the organization”.

The event was attended by Premier David Burt, Minister of Social Development and Sports, Michael Weeks and Minister of Education and Workforce Development, Diallo Rabain.

Mirrors volunteers received either a certificate or pin based on the number of times they have volunteered, in recognition of their dedication to the Programme and the children of Bermuda. There were also special awards to honour further contributions to Mirrors.

A spokesperson said: “Masterworks made the perfect backdrop for the event as they are currently showcasing Mirrors’ 2^nd Annual Student Art and Digital Competition, sponsored by Axis, which had the theme, ‘Bermuda: Our Community’.

“The competition was open to any student enrolled at a local public or private school for the 2017/2018 school year. The exhibit has been on display at Masterworks since July 6 and will wrap-up on August 6th.”

Minister Weeks delivered remarks at the reception saying: “When the Mirrors Programme was established 11 years ago, it consisted of a single community programme for youth aged 15 to 18 years.

“The success of that programme, due in large part to your contributions as volunteers and supporters, resulted in the organization positively impacting youth and expanding its services, continuously evolving. This included incorporating an innovative new curriculum, as well as a student art and digital competition.

“We couldn’t have made it to this moment without you. Mirrors volunteers are some of the most amazing individuals a person could ever meet.

“Thank you for expressing the importance of Bermuda’s youth through your actions in your volunteer roles. This evening has been designed with you in mind, to celebrate the contribution you have been to supporting young adults in transforming their lives,” he added.

Minister Weeks also encouraged the volunteers in attendance “to remain socially conscious and continue to volunteer in service of our youth”.

Your consistent presence overwhelmingly impacts their lives,” he said.

Each year, over 100 individuals volunteer for Mirrors and one volunteer who “goes above and beyond” is recognized as the Mirrors ‘Volunteer of the Year’.

The spokesperson added: “Jonathan demonstrated a deep commitment to the organization as he managed all of the camp production and logistics needs, putting in many hours before, during and after camps to ensure that Mirrors operated with the highest level of professionalism that our youth deserve.

♦ Mirrors Outstanding Contribution by Mirrors Alumni & Friends Association (MAFA) Board Member Award- Denise Wilson-Adams

♦ Denise demonstrated tremendous leadership of MAFA, putting in extensive time and after-hours work to maximize MAFA support of Mirrors needs.

Mirrors Special Honorees:

♦ Dr Gordon Campbell and Dr Shaina Kelly, received awards for providing pro-bono medicals to Community Programme participants over the past years.

♦ Anton Gilbert, with Outward Bound was awarded for providing additional support with Mirrors’ Outdoor Adventure Day on Paget Island as well ongoing support of the Fort Restoration Project.

♦ Ruth Moran was awarded for providing many years of medical support by volunteering as Mirrors’ residential wellness person, to meet the health and wellness needs of the students.

♦ Gold Level – These individuals who completed ten or more volunteer roles with Mirrors:

Barbara Tucker, Glenn Tucker, Kerry Judd, Ruth Moran and Tucoma Robinson

♦ Silver Level – These individuals have completed between seven and nine volunteer roles with Mirrors:

♦ Bronze Level – These individuals completed between five and six volunteer roles with Mirrors:
