Aecon Group Inc., a partner in the redevelopment of Bermuda’s airport, has announced the awarding of the mechanical contract to Update Contracting Bermuda Airport Limited (Update Contracting) and the fuel hydrant system contract to Phoenix Petroleum

Update Contracting, a Dublin, Ireland-based company registered in Bermuda, is a multi-disciplinary provider of mechanical, engineering and plumbing services with experience in providing building services engineering to a wide range of client sectors.

For the mechanical systems contract, Update Contracting will be working with sub-contractors to complete the following work:

  • Air Care Bermuda will provide and install fire alarm and sprinkler systems, in association with Troy Life Safety Ltd.
  • BAC Group of Companies will supply chilled water, plumbing and refrigeration systems.
  • Keen Limited, has been selected to fit ventilation systems for the building.

Meanwhile, Phoenix Petroleum has been hired for the fuel hydrant system. They will work with local sub-contractor Raposo Welding Services Limited, based in St George’s.

Frank Ross, Aecon’s Executive Director, Infrastructure, said: “We are pleased to be working with many local companies to provide the mechanical systems of the new airport terminal. Their insight will be invaluable in ensuring that the new facility is world-class and meets Bermuda’s local standards. We look forward to working with them.”

The construction of the new airport terminal is expected to take 40 months to complete and will be finished in 2020.

This is the latest round of contracts to be awarded to local construction and supply companies, with four major contracts awarded in June of this year to Horsfield Landscape and Design, D&J Construction Services, SAL Trading Limited and Canadian company, Benson Steel, who is working with Correia Construction Limited. Eight local contractors were also appointed to carry out other work at the construction site at that time in addition to a further ten contracts which were announced in April and May.

The redevelopment of LF Wade International Airport is being implemented under a Government-to-Government framework agreement between the Governments of Canada and Bermuda. In terms of the agreement, Bermuda Skyport Corporation Limited will oversee the overall development and implementation of the project and the Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC), through a subcontract to Aecon, will deliver the construction component of the project.
