Magistrate Tyrone Chin remanded a 40-year-old man with no known address in custody in connection with that New Year’s Day assault in the City of Hamilton that caused a senior citizen to be airlifted overseas for treatment.
Alvin Leverock, stands accused of causing grievous bodily harm to Herndon Smith with intent to disable him on New Year’s Day on Reid Street in Hamilton.
He was not required to enter a plea to the indictable offence which will be dealt with in the Supreme Court.
The victim was found lying unconscious outside Washington Mall around 11:30am on January 1.
Police said he had fallen to the ground after another man allegedly struck him in the face following a verbal altercation.
He was taken to the hospital’s Emergency Department before police arrived at the scene, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit in critical condition before he was airlifted abroad with severe head injuries.
The alleged assailant’s case was set down for mention and he was remanded in custody at Westgate Correctional Facility.
