A man fortunately escaped with his life when his 32ft boat Woodstock, moored next to a gas station and a packed restaurant exploded this afternoon (Oct 9) at Marginal Wharf in St George’s.

A Bermuda Maritime Operations spokesperson said the man managed to dive into the water after the explosion.

Eyewitnesses say gas attendants helped to get the owner to safety as the vessel burnt down to the water line and eventually sunk.

The boat had just finished fuelling when the fire broke out when the engine was started.

Thankfully, there were no injuries.

Gavin Carter, Acting Sergeant for the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS), said: “A call was received through 911 at 1.42pm of a boat on fire at Dowling’s marina.

““The boat was towed to Marginal Wharf, where it was extinguished by the BFRS using a turret monitor at 2.39pm, at which time the vessel sunk.

“Clearwater and Hamilton stations were in attendance with a total of ten BFRS personnel in five vehicles.”
