Police arrested a man on suspicion of possessing a canister of pepper spray, who now faces charges for the prohibited weapon, in addition to drug related charges.

A spokesman said the man was stopped in a car in Devonshire around 3pm on Saturday,

Mobile patrol officers stopped the vehicle on suspicion of having illegal window tinting, near the junction of Middle Road and Montpelier Road.

“As they engaged the driver of the vehicle, officers detected a strong odour of marijuana coming from the car,“ he added.

“This was pointed out to the driver who was informed the vehicle would be searched under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

“The driver initially refused to exit the vehicle, but eventually complied with the officers’ request and the vehicle was searched.

“During the search, officers seized a quantity of plant-like material, a grinder and a small canister of suspected pepper spray.“

The driver was cautioned and subsequently arrested on suspicion of possessing a controlled drug with drug equipment and the canister of spray.
