The history of Bermuda gombeys has been documented by many over the years, but never by a local artist who depicts the disciplines of the men and young boys behind the masks on canvas.

Known for her captivating ability to transform the very core of souls through art, local artist April Branco set out on a photographic journey more than a year ago to illustrate the real stories behind the H&H Gombeys.

With thousands of photographs to work from, she is now compiling her paintings in a book to be published later this year.

Proceeds will go towards funding performances abroad by the gombey troupe to help spread Bermuda culture around the world. And she’s hopeful the initial grant by the Bermuda Arts Council to get started will be backed by public support for funding to get the book published.
