Hurricane Lorenzo prompted UK officials to issue two separate yellow weather warnings for rain for large parts of England and Wales on Monday and Tuesday.

Forecasters say Lorenzo, “which is roaring just west of the UK, is going to lash Britain this week with high winds and rain which could cause flooding so extreme it endangers life”.

“There will be another spell of rain across much of the UK on Monday,” Met Office meteorologist Mark Wilson said.

“There are warnings in force for Wales and western England.”

“The worst weather from Hurricane Lorenzo is expected to hit the country on Wednesday and Thursday, ” the report added.

The Met Office has also worked the Environmental Agency to share flood warnings as rain continues to batter most of the UK”.

“People are being told to leave caravans and properties in the area between 7am and 10am on Tuesday and not to return until it is safe to do so.”

There were also “urged to take with them any medication, pets and anything urgent they might need over the next 48 hours”.

Residents were also advised “to take care along beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads as large waves and sea spray could be dangerous”.

As of 8pm Monday, the Environment Agency had issued 70 flood warnings advising immediate action and 184 flood alerts urging people to prepare for possible flooding, all covering the length and breadth of the country.”

One meteorologist said: “We could see some local quite torrential downpours and a risk of surface water flooding.”
