Forecasters at the Bermuda Weather Service expect Hurricane Irma to pass some 880 miles to the south of Bermuda early Thursday morning. But the Category 3 hurricane could move closer to the island after that.
Packing winds of more than 115mph with gusts in excess of 138mph, Irma is now bearing down on the Caribbean. Hurricane warnings are currently in effect in Antigua, Barbuda and Puerto Rico. On its present path, she is also projected to pass over the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos Islands, the Dominican Republic and Cuba.
This latest storm is expected to reach its closes point of approach to Bermuda around 6am on Thursday. As of 6am this morning, Irma was some 1,319 miles to the south east of the island.
