Bermuda’s Governor, John Rankin has called on residents to “demonstrate both the inclusivity and diversity” of the entire community, in the lead up the island’s inaugural Pride Parade this weekend.
In a statement released today, he said: “Bermuda’s first ever Pride event is in line with the rights of freedom of assembly, freedom of conscience and freedom of expression guaranteed under the Bermuda Constitution and international human rights Conventions.
“I hope that this will be an enjoyable event for all involved and, like many other events on the island, demonstrate both the inclusivity and diversity of the community in Bermuda.”
The event gets underway at 9am on Saturday, August 31, at Victoria Park, with the parade scheduled to start at 11am and run for approximately 90 minutes to two hours, before returning to the park for an afternoon of entertainment through to 7pm.
Organizers of the parade held a news conference at City Hall at 1pm to release details on final planning for the weekend of events.
We’ll have more in a subsequent report.
