Regretfully, Bermuda Real has learned of the death of former Commissioner of Police Frederick ‘Penny’ Bean, who sadly died this weekend in his 83rd year.
A police spokesman said tributes and condolence on behalf of Mr Bean’s relatives and a host of his former colleagues on behalf of the Bermuda Police Service (BPS).
Mr Bean joined the BPS in 1956 at the age of 19. He moved up to become a detective in 1959 posted with CID before moving on to what was then the newly formed narcotics department in 1965 as the officer in charge.
Moving up through the ranks, he was later promoted to chief inspector in 1971 and transferred to Special Branch before being promoted to superintendent.
For his many years of outstanding service, Mr Bean was awarded an OBE in 1991 and also received several commissioner’ commendations, including the Queen’s Police Medal.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
