News Release HAMILTON, Bermuda — Join us at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) for an inspiring presentation by the distinguished scholar, geoscientist, and advocate for STEM equity, Dr Vernon R Morris. We are thrilled to welcome parents, students, and educators to this engaging event, which will take place on October 18th from 5:30pm to 7:30pm in our accessible Tradewinds Auditorium.

Dr Morris, a Professor of Chemistry and Environmental Sciences and the Director of the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences at Arizona State University’s New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, is renowned for his commitment to expanding the horizons of underrepresented groups in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Throughout his career, he has mentored over 200 students at various academic levels, from high school to graduate programs.

His impactful hands-on outreach initiatives and informal science education projects have reached a remarkable 50,000 students worldwide. Notable among these initiatives are a network of high school weather camps, which have opened doors to career opportunities in atmospheric sciences for nearly 800 students from underserved communities. Additionally, he has organized “Community Science Fests” that serve as a blueprint for bringing the wonders of science to communities and subpopulations traditionally underexposed to such opportunities.

Recognizing that STEM fields represent one of the fastest-growing sectors in the global economy, Dr Morris emphasizes the importance of exposing more Bermudians to these disciplines. This exposure, coupled with robust academic preparation, empowers individuals to address Bermuda’s most pressing challenges while advocating for those most affected by them.

Karla Lacey, BUEI’s CEO, notes that Dr Morris’s talk is highly anticipated and will complement the discussions taking place during the upcoming Youth Climate Summit. It will equip young people, their families, and peers with valuable insights, aligning with the themes explored throughout the week-long Summit.

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the US Consulate General for their generous sponsorship of Dr Vernon R. Morris’s visit to Bermuda in support of the Youth Climate Summit. Their commitment to empowering our youth and advancing the cause of climate action is invaluable, and we are deeply appreciative of their support in making this event possible.

This free event is open to the public and offers an interactive Q&A session with Dr Morris, followed by a light supper. Due to limited seating, we encourage advance registration. To reserve your seat, please visit the BUEI’s Youth Climate Summit website at www.YCSBDA.comor contact BUEI’s Ocean Gift Shop at 294-0204. Let’s come together to foster a passion for STEM and a commitment to addressing the climate challenges facing our world at the BUEI Youth Climate Summit.
