Employees at the Elbow Beach Hotel were notified this week that the resort will not reopen this year for the current season and will remain shutdown until the new year due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
As first reported by TNN this morning, the letter said: “As you are probably aware, the global effects of COVID-19 have had a serious impact on our tourism season. This has prevented our ability to operate as usual this year.
“Consequently, the hotel owner, The Elbow Beach Hotel and Development Company Limited, has concluded that the property will remain closed until December 31, 2020.”
Rosedon Hotel in Pembroke made the same decision in June while continuing to run restaurant services and opted to fulfill the redundancy requirements for non-unionised staff laid off beyond a four-month period.
The letter sent to staff at Elbow Beach also stated: “The hotel owner is aware of their financial obligation to non-Unionised full-time and part-time employees, by way of redundancy under the Employment Act 2000 and we will be working with (employees) in the upcoming months to fulfill their obligation where applicable.
“We will be contacting employees in due course as this process is underway.”
