News Release: HAMILTON, Bermuda – The Head of the Public Service, Cherie Whitter announced the appointment of Mr Clark Somner to the post of Clerk to the Legislature, effective April 1st.

Mr Somner has spent 27 years in the Public Service in the roles of Deputy Clerk to the Legislature and Clerk to the Senate. 

During his tenure, Mr Somner has also served as an Assistant Clerk and Senior Assistant Clerk prior to becoming Deputy Clerk and has served as Secretary/Clerk to both the Public Accounts Committee and the Parliamentary Committee on the Office of the Auditor General. He has also conducted workshops on parliamentary procedure and the legislative process for senior Public Service Officers and for Members of the Senate and the House of Assembly.

In 2001, Mr Somner enjoyed a Secondment to the UK Houses of Parliament and has completed the Westminster and other Overseas Territories Workshops on Public Accounts Committees.

Speaker of the House, the Hon. Dennis Lister said, “I extend a heartfelt congratulations to Mr Somner on his appointment as the Clerk to the Legislature. Mr. Somner brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role, having served as a member of the Legislative staff for many years. Indeed, he has been a constant presence in the Legislature during the many years that I have served. As Speaker it has been a pleasure to work with Mr. Somner first as Deputy Clerk and for the past year as Acting Clerk. Mr Somner’s direction and input will be invaluable during the transition that will accompany the reform of the Legislature.”

Mr Somner is also credited with organizing the Public Accounts Committee’s 2018 Visit to the Parliament of Wales and to Westminster in London.

Mr Somner is a graduate of St Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia and worked several years in Bermuda’s private banking sector before first joining the Office in 1987.
