The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) remains “hopeful” that their former colleague will be located soon, after Huron Vidal, 73 was reported missing at sea in Dominica.
As first reported by Bermuda Real on Monday (Aug 15), the former policeman, was reported missing after going out on a small motor boat alone on August 11.
Mr Vidal served with the BPS between 1976 and 2004, mainly with the Marine Section. He retired as a watch sergeant in the Eastern Division.
A spokeswoman for the BPS said: “Through social media, the BPS has learnt of a recent news story out of Dominica, reporting that a former Bermuda Police officer had been reported missing after going out to sea alone on a small boat.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Vidal family and we remain hopeful that he is located soon.”
Meanwhile, the Bermuda Ex-Police Association posted the following statement on its Facebook page:
“We have heard some disturbing news that … our good friend and colleague, retired Sergeant Huron Vidal, went out to sea in Dominica about 8am this morning on a small boat with a little engine.
“His family have not heard from him since that time and are getting worried about Huron.
“We know that Huron’s many friends will be hoping and praying for his safe return. We will keep you posted as and when we hear any further news.”
A video clip by TDN Network, featuring Mr Vidal’s daughter, Sherma said her father goes out on fishing trips regularly.
She also stated that the engine on his boat was second hand and “may have been giving him some problems”.
“Since that morning that he went out we have not seen him, we have not heard from him,” she said.
“We alerted the officials, we alerted the Coastguard of Dominica. They were out trying to locate him. We didn’t get any positive feedback.
“We sent some local fishermen out, there were about three or four boats, in addition to the Coastguard. The Dominica Coastguard also contacted the French Coastguard and they also sent their boats and a plane as well they told us.
“They are still in the process of trying to locate him. We haven’t had a sign of his boat, a sign of his clothes.
“We are hoping that anyone who is out there on the sea between Dominica, Martinique – anywhere if they can look for him. You can call us on 615-1008, 277-9066, 225-5599 275-5177 – the area code is 767. We really want to find him.”
