Constable Jones won a silver medal in the women’s 55-59 age group with a time of 38 minutes and 15 seconds while her son, Constable Godfrey, was fourth in the men’s 18-29 long jump with a leap of 6.74 metres; reached the semi-finals of the 100 metres with a first round time of 11.35 seconds followed by a semi-final time of 11.54 seconds and was fourth in the first heat of the 400 metres with a time of 54.95 seconds.

Reflecting on the opening ceremony and her race, Constable Jones stated: “The Opening Ceremony, I can only describe, was like being at the Olympics.

“There were displays of various police and fire vehicles, celebrities including Jackie Chan, even the President of China attended.  Participants from so many other countries also attended; Brazil, Nigeria, Spain, France, Bahamas, Trinidad, New Zealand, United States, UK, India, just to name a few, as there were many more countries represented.

“There were also fireworks as the grand finale, which was an amazing display!

“On my race day it was extremely hot, the temperature had risen to over 100 degrees. I’ll admit my race was most challenging because of the heat, many people had to walk and some couldn’t finish and had to be transported away by ambulance.

“I was fortunate enough to have had plenty of experience to know to keep hydrated and run smartly within my means to not let the heat beat me, let alone the other participants.”

The first World Police & Fire Games were held in San Jose, California, USA in 1985.

It is a biennial athletic event, open to active and retired law enforcement and fire service personnel throughout the world.
