Bermuda’s commercial fishermen put the island’s media on notice today that they will be holding a news conference on Thursday (Nov 24) to speak out against the Blue Ocean Prosperity Plan initiative.
In a statement released on behalf of The Fishermen’s Association of Bermuda this morning, they are firmly against the Government’s plan “to close/restrict 20 percent of Bermuda’s waters including those areas found in Bermuda’s Exclusive Economic Zone and more specifically, in our nearshore waters”.
The Blue Ocean Prosperity Plan initiative is spearheaded by the Bermuda Government in partnership with the Waitt Institute and The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences.
When contacted by Bermuda Real, a spokesman urged all commercial fishermen to attend the news conference, to be held at the Spanish Point Boat Club at 1pm.
“They should bring their families with them because this affects all of us, our livelihood – it’s how we put food on our tables,” he added.
