Bermuda Electric Light Company (BELCO) officials were tight lipped when contacted by Bermuda Real this week on word that at least 12 staff members have tested positive for COVID-19, with one employee now in intensive care.
Reports reaching Bermuda Real suggest the employee contracted the virus outside of the company. But our sources say that’s not true.
Since then, our sources say another two employees have tested positive.
When asked for an official comment, Liberty Group President Wayne Caines said: “The Company will not comment on the health of staff as such matters are private.
But he said: “With Bermuda currently experiencing an outbreak of COVID infections, the safety and welfare of our employees at the Liberty Group of Companies is of paramount importance.
“The Liberty Group, which includes Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited (BELCO), is taking a proactive approach to ensure the health and wellness of staff and our customers,” he added.
“The Company has implemented all Government recommended safety measures including wearing masks, physically distancing, hand hygiene, remote working and working in bubbles where possible and limiting the number of customers in BELCO’s customer service areas.
“In addition, the Company is offering frequent on site COVID testing for all staff.
“The Company will not comment on the health of staff as such matters are private.”
