News Release: HAMILTON, Bermuda – Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited (“BELCO”) held the Company’s Occupational Health, Safety and Environment (OHSE) Day on Friday (May 17).

OHSE Day is an annual training day for employees and this year the theme is ‘The Life Saving Behaviour of Safety Controls’.

The day began with a service to remember the 18 BELCO workers who have lost their lives while working for the Company. The workers being remembered are: James Earl, Kenneth Packwood, Edward Hall, Francis Britton, George Isaac, F. Brewster, WM Henry Thorne, Manuel Moniz, Manuel DeMoura, Philip Correia, Ernest Dowling, Orion Hall, Geoffrey Frith, Frank Hassell, Robert Ottley, Ralph Millett, Percy Iris, and Malik Blyden.

During the day various seminars were held with dedicated sessions for women’s and men’s health, mental health and wellness as well as an electric vehicle car show.

Members of the emergency services and the public attended two training sessions. The first session was Electrical Vehicle (EV) Safety& Incident Management Training which was offered to Fire, Police, EMT’s and tow truck operators, as well as BELCO’s first responders. The training objective was to provide relevant information to create department policies for (EV) incident management, create a Standard Operating Procedure for EV incident handling and increase safety awareness for all first and second responders when dealing with EV incidents.

A second session on fire extinguisher training was also open to the public. The course provided participants with the necessary training required to effectively use a fire extinguisher as well as the legal duties of fire marshals and employers in accordance with Part 8 of the Bermuda Occupational Safety and Health Regulations 2009. The session also provided participants with an understanding of fire hazards and fire safety arrangements, use of fire extinguishers and what emergency evacuation procedures should entail.
