News Release: HAMILTON, Bermuda- Mr Alan Purcell has been appointed to serve as the Acting US Consul General to Bermuda.

Acting Consul General Purcell is scheduled to assume his duties the week of January 25 – succeeding former Consul General Lee Rizzuto, who left the island on January 19.
A career Foreign Service Officer, Mr Purcell served most recently as the Freedom of Information Act Coordinator for the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs in the State Department.
As the Acting Consul General, Mr Purcell wil manage a team whose mission is to protect US citizens in Bermuda and to deepen the strong economic and cultural ties between the United States and Bermuda.
His professional experience includes serving in the following positions:
  • Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (2019-20)
  • Director of the Office of European Affairs in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (2018-19)
  • Political Counselor in Kyiv, Ukraine (2014-17)
  • Deputy Director of the Office of Caucasus Affairs and Regional Conflicts (2011-13)
  • Eastern Mediterranean Regional Counterterrorism Coordinator, based in Athens, Greece (2008-11)
  • Political Officer in Tbilisi, Georgia (2006-08)
  • Belarus desk officer (2004-06)
  • Political Officer in Chisinau, Moldova (2002-04)
  • Consular Officer in Budapest, Hungary (1999-2001)
